As the weather gets colder, it's time for us to consider those who are struggling this winter. Particularly our homeless population.
Most of us just assume that homelessness is mostly an Indianapolis problem. We pass people on the sidewalk downtown or see tents from bridges or overpasses. We equate the old guy on the corner of 465 with a cardboard sign to “the homeless.” We avert our eyes and keep driving.
It’s not just Indianapolis that suffers. In fact, 26% of Hendricks County residents are unable to meet their basic needs of food, childcare, transportation, and housing putting them on the edge of crisis every month.
Of those that turn to homeless service programs for help, 60-70% are employed but make under the $14 per hour need to sustain a household.
The Morgan County Sheriff responded to 600 domestic violence calls just this year. Yet only 4-6% of domestic violence victims seek emergency shelter. Since 2020, Indiana has seen a 102% increase in domestic violence related homicides. Lack of housing options and financial stability is one of the main reasons survivors return to their abusers.
Housing instability is not an Indianapolis issue. Families on the brink of crisis or deep in it are in all corners of our region.
We’ve counted on you to support the REALTOR® Foundation in the past and we hope we can again this year!
